A typical root canal appointment takes about 60 to 90 minutes, and we explain every step before we begin. Here is what to expect:

2. Numbing and access. Once you are completely numb and comfortable, your dentist reaches the inner chamber of the tooth through a small opening.
3. Cleaning, shaping, and sealing. The infected pulp is removed, each root canal is cleaned, and the space is shaped for a biocompatible filling material. The tooth is then sealed.
4. Aftercare and restoration. You receive instructions tailored to your situation, and in most cases a crown is recommended to protect the treated tooth for the long term.

What Is Recovery Like After a Root Canal?

Some mild tenderness around the treated tooth is normal for a few days and typically responds well to over-the-counter medication. Follow the aftercare instructions you receive, and call us if anything seems out of the ordinary.

In most cases, a dental crown is recommended to protect and strengthen the tooth after root canal therapy. If the tooth needs additional internal support, a post and core restoration may be placed before the crown.
