Halloween is a time to enjoy and have fun with your family and friends. But with the sweets and candies, there is also the risk of cavities. Below are a few dental care tips that you can follow to have a safe Halloween.
Candy isn’t the only thing you should be eating during this time of year! Pumpkin seeds, apples, carrots, and celery are all great foods to protect your teeth from decay or discoloration. If you still want some candy, just be sure to brush afterward. Eating these foods in addition to brushing after you eat candy or other sugary foods will help keep cavities away.
If you want to go the extra mile, you can also eat cheese right after Halloween to help neutralize acids in your teeth! Cheese contains calcium and protein that help strengthen your enamel and prevent bacteria from breaking down your enamel.
Halloween candy can lead to cavities and gum disease, so it’s important to brush your teeth after indulging in any treats or sweets. Remember to brush for two minutes at a time twice a day. It’s also good to floss your teeth at least once a day to keep food and plaque from building up between the teeth.
If you do end up with decay or periodontal problems, call our dentist in Freehold Township right away to make an appointment for treatment. A cavity is easier to treat the sooner you catch it!
After meals, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water to remove food particles. If you can’t brush after eating, chew a piece of sugarless gum to help clear food from your teeth and prevent cavities. Rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash can also help kill bacteria that cause plaque buildup.
Although candy and food aren’t good for your teeth, this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy tasty treats on Halloween night! You can still eat your favorite candies and chocolates in moderation if you are able to visit our dentist in Freehold Township every six months for routine checkups and cleanings. If it’s been longer than six months since your last appointment, be sure to contact our office to schedule an appointment to get your oral health back on track!
